Review Samsung Qn55q60ra 55 (3840 X 2160) Smart 4k Ultra High Definiton Qled Tv
Market Context
The Samsung Q60/Q60R is a 2019 entry-level QLED TV. Although it replaces the Samsung Q6FN/Q6/Q6F QLED 2018 in Samsung's lineup, information technology's meant to be a more than basic model and lacks some more advanced features institute on college-end QLEDs. Information technology'southward comparable to near other mid-range LED TVs, like the Sony X850F or TCL 6 Series 2018.
Design
Curved No
The Samsung Q60R has an excellent, minimalist pattern, with thin bezels that aren't distracting. The TV is mostly made out of plastic, and it has born cablevision management on the back. The feet are wide-set up and they support the Tv well, with no sign of wobbling.
The stand has a large footprint that's nearly the entire width of the TV. The legs are angled, but can't be reversed.
Footprint of the 55" stand: 38.v" x 10.4".
Max Thickness two.52" (6.4 cm)
The Samsung Q60R is roughly uniform and almost the same thickness as the Samsung Q6FN/Q6/Q6F QLED 2018, and so it won't stick out much when wall-mounted.
The build quality is alright. The Television set has a by and large plastic construction and there aren't whatsoever obvious issues or flaws. All the same, the bottom left and right corners of the bezel on our unit were cracked in shipping. Nosotros think this is an isolated issue, and it doesn't affect our tests in whatever way.

Contrast with local dimming N/A
The Samsung Q60R has an outstanding native contrast ratio. It can produce deep, inky blacks, which is slap-up for night room viewing, although this tin vary betwixt units.

Update 08/02/2019: We've retested with the latest firmware, and the SDR meridian brightness is roughly in the same ballpark. Our measurements have been updated.
The Samsung Q60R has very proficient peak effulgence, merely it's significantly dimmer than the Samsung Q6FN/Q6/Q6F QLED 2018 and the Samsung NU8000. At that place'south about no difference in brightness with dissimilar content, which is keen, simply small highlights aren't as vivid, as seen in the dip in brightness with the ii% window test.
We measured the pinnacle effulgence after calibration, using the 'Flick' Picture Style and 'Warm ii' Color Temperature. Unlike movie modes and colour temperatures may exist brighter.

Update 08/02/2019: We've retested with the latest firmware, and the HDR elevation brightness is roughly in the same ballpark. Our measurements take been updated.
The Samsung Q60R has mediocre peak brightness in HDR. Pocket-size, brilliant highlights in some scenes aren't very bright and don't stand out the way they should in HDR.
These measurements were taken in the 'Movie' Picture Manner, with no scale settings and no extra image processing options. Some settings may produce a brighter image.

Gray uniformity is decent, simply this can vary between units. The sides of the screen are noticeably darker, but the middle is much more uniform. In that location'south some slight dirty screen consequence, which could get distracting, specially when watching sports. In dark scenes, the uniformity is much improve.

Like about VA panels, the Samsung Q60R has poor viewing angles. Images announced done out when viewed from the side, and the brightness also decreases the more you move away from the centre.

Black uniformity is decent, although this tin can vary between units. There's noticeable flash lighting, mostly at the top correct corner. If you want better blackness uniformity, check out the Samsung Q60/Q60T QLED, which is the successor to this TV.
Screen End Semi-gloss
Total Reflections 5.9%
Indirect Reflections 0.6%
Calculated Direct Reflections 5.four%
The Samsung Q60R has decent reflection handling. Its semi-gloss stop helps diffuse indirect light, but it struggles in well-lit environments, so it's all-time to avoid placing it directly in front of bright lighting.

The color accuracy out-of-the-box is fantabulous, although this can vary between units. Aside from the color blue, nigh inaccuracies are difficult to spot. White balance is very good, though the gamma is too low for the most role, causing images to appear brighter than they should. With Colour Temperature fix to 'Warm two', the color temperature is very close to our target of 6500K.
White Residual dE 0.35

The color accuracy is remarkable after scale. While information technology isn't improved much, the white indicate is extremely close to perfection, and gamma follows the two.2 target almost perfectly. Whatever inaccuracies shouldn't exist noticeable to the naked centre. There's also an auto-scale function, simply information technology still requires a colorimeter and specialized software.
Y'all tin see our recommended settings here.
480p content, similar DVDs, is handled well, with no obvious upscaling artifacts.
720p content from older game consoles or cable TV is displayed well, with no obvious bug.
1080p content, like Blu-ray movies or non-4k consoles, is displayed most equally well as native 4k content.
Update 10/17/2019: During retesting, it was discovered that there's some subpixel dimming. The score has been updated to reverberate this.
Native 4k content is displayed about perfectly, with no obvious problems. In that location's some subpixel dimming out of game mode.
This Television receiver doesn't support an 8k signal.
Like other LCD panels, the Samsung Q60R uses a BGR subpixel layout, which can affect the way text is rendered when using the Television as a PC monitor. You can read well-nigh it here.

The Samsung Q60R can display a wide colour gamut, which is great for HDR content. As an entry-level QLED, it can't produce a color gamut equally wide as some of the higher-end QLEDs and is closer to the Samsung NU8000, only this isn't unexpected. Nosotros confirmed these results multiple times.
The 'Movie' EOTF follows the input stimulus very closely until it starts to whorl off near the Television set'southward peak effulgence. In 'Game' manner, the EOTF is like, except some scenes may exist a petty brighter.
If you discover HDR also dark, y'all can try increasing the Gamma to maximum and the Effulgence to '5.' If this is still besides dark, you can try setting Contrast Enhancer to 'Max.' With all of these enabled, the paradigm is noticeably brighter, as shown in this EOTF plot.

The Samsung Q60R has proficient gradient treatment, though in that location's some banding when displaying night green, blue, and grey. If banding bothers y'all, setting Digital Clean View to 'Auto' eliminates near of information technology but can cause the loss of some fine details in sure scenes.

Nosotros don't await VA panels to experience permanent image retention, as the VA panel in our long-term test appears immune.
Movement
80% Response Time iii.six ms
100% Response Time 10.4 ms
The Samsung Q60R has an excellent response time. There'due south some overshoot in the 0-20% transition, which can crusade some haloing in very dark scenes, simply it shouldn't be very noticeable otherwise. In other transitions, there's yet some very small-scale blur, and there are visible duplications due to the backlight flicker.
Flicker-Gratis No
PWM Dimming Frequency 240 Hz
The Samsung Q60R uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to dim its backlight. It's only flicker-gratis when the backlight is at its max. Otherwise, it flickers at 240Hz in almost modes, but the flicker frequency changes depending on the mode. In 'Movie' and 'Game' mode, or when Auto Motion Plus is fix to either 'Custom' or 'Auto,' the flicker automatically changes to 120Hz, similar to the Samsung Q6FN/Q6/Q6F QLED 2018.
Optional BFI Yes
Min Flicker for sixty fps 60 Hz
60 Hz for 60 fps Yes
120 Hz for 120 fps Yes
Min Flicker for sixty fps in Game Mode 60 Hz
The Samsung Q60R has an optional Blackness Frame Insertion feature meant to further reduce motion mistiness. Enabling Machine Move Plus automatically changes the flicker to 120Hz, and setting LED Clear Motion to 'On' reduces the flicker frequency to 60Hz, or 120Hz when displaying 120Hz content.
When movement interpolation is enabled with the flicker at 120Hz, the pulse timing isn't very good, causing some strange motion artifacts in some areas of the screen, every bit seen in our 60 fps Motion Interpolation picture.
Motility Interpolation (30 fps) Yeah
Motion Interpolation (60 fps) Yep
The Samsung Q60R can interpolate lower frame rate content upwardly to 120Hz. To add the 'Lather Opera' effect, set Auto Move Plus to 'Custom' and arrange the Blur Reduction slider for 60Hz content, and the Judder Reduction slider to interpolate low frame rate content, like movies, upwardly to 60Hz.
Annotation that, like many Samsung TVs, simply setting Auto Motion Plus to 'Custom' changes the backlight flicker from 240Hz to 120Hz.
The 43" and 49" models accept 60Hz panels and tin only interpolate upwards to 60Hz.
Frame Hold Time @ 24 fps 31.iii ms
Frame Hold Time @ 60 fps six.3 ms
Due to the TV's fast response time, low frame charge per unit content is held on screen for longer periods, which can cause the paradigm to appear to stutter. This may carp some people, peculiarly in slow panning shots or mural shots. If this bothers you lot, enabling motion interpolation can help.
Judder-Free 24p Yes
Judder-Free 24p via 60p Yes
Judder-Free 24p via 60i Yes
Judder-Gratis 24p via Native Apps Aye
The Samsung Q60R can remove judder from all sources. To do and then, set Auto Motion Plus to 'Custom' and exit both sliders at '0,' unless you desire to add together motility interpolation.

Update 12/17/2019: A flaw was discovered in the way nosotros were testing for 1000-SYNC compatibility with TVs. We've corrected the flaw, and have retested the 2019 Samsung and LG TVs, and establish that the Samsung Q60R doesn't work properly with NVIDIA's electric current Adaptive Sync drivers.
Similar the 2018 QLEDS, the Samsung Q60R supports FreeSync variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. When gaming at 1080p or 1440p, the VRR range is splendid and is effectively e'er tear-costless. At 4k, the range is narrower, as the Goggle box only supports upwardly to 4k @ 60Hz.
Note that the 43" and 49" models don't support FreeSync.

Update 08/02/2019: We've retested the Television set with the latest firmware, and the input lag has decreased slightly across the board. The Goggle box is no longer skipping frames when sent a 1080p or 1440p @ 120Hz signal. We've updated our numbers and scores.
Update 05/28/2019: We retested the Samsung Q60R input lag in 1080p @ 120Hz and in 1440p @ 120Hz. We initially tested it in Game Mode, but the Television skips frames in Game Mode. Therefore, it was retested in Motion-picture show mode, where it doesn't skip frames.
The Samsung Q60R has an excellent low input lag, as long as Game Mode is activated. With variable refresh rate enabled, at 1080p and 1440p the input lag is almost as good as high-end gaming monitors, which is great for PC or Xbox One gaming.
Like the 2018 QLEDS, it allows for motion interpolation in Game Style, and even though the input lag increases, it's still fairly low.
In PC Manner, Game Manner is besides required for the lowest input lag.

Update 08/02/2019: We've retested the TV with the latest firmware, and it's now able to display 1080p and 1440p @ 120Hz without skipping frames in PC fashion.
The Samsung Q60R supports virtually mutual resolutions and refresh rates, including 1440p @ 60Hz. Most high bandwidth signals crave Input Bespeak Plus to be enabled for the port in utilise, which is the new name for HDMI UHD Color.
Information technology tin as well display chroma four:iv:4 content properly, which ways that text appears abrupt when used as a PC monitor, but only when the input label is set to 'PC.' The Tv set usually automatically detects this. Notation that in PC fashion, many of the settings are unavailable and in that location are only two picture modes. Chroma 4:iv:4 doesn't work properly with 1440p @ 120Hz.
The 43" and 49" models have 60Hz panels and don't support 120Hz inputs.

The frequency response is adequate. Information technology has a somewhat counterbalanced sound contour, so dialogue should sound okay. Notwithstanding, it lacks thump in the bass, and overall the Tv doesn't get very loud, so it may not be well-suited for big or decorated environments.
Our tests were washed with the Adaptive Sound feature enabled, but left Adaptive Book disabled, as it drastically limited the max volume. This feature could be useful if y'all find that commercials play at a higher book than the content you're watching.

It also has a built-in microphone for voice control, which allows you to admission most of the Idiot box's functions but can't perform functions within apps, like searching Netflix for a specific motion-picture show.
The OneRemote feature allows you to control other devices with the remote, even if they don't support HDMI-CEC.
Like most Samsung TVs, the controls are in the heart of the TV, underneath the Samsung logo. The controls are like to the Samsung Q6FN, with a single button that brings upward a card. From the carte, y'all can plow the Idiot box off, arrange the book, or change channels/inputs.
